Chelsea slash wages by 30% due to lack of Champions League

As Chelsea’s Premier League position has dropped significantly, the team was relying on winning the Champions League to secure a spot in the competition next season. However, their hopes were dashed when they were defeated by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals with a total score of 0-4.

As a result of not being able to participate in the Champions League next season, Chelsea will lose a significant amount of money. Consequently, the team will have to reduce the salaries of their players to cope with the Financial Fair Play rules.

Owner Todd Boehly foresaw this situation and included clauses in the players’ contracts relating to playing in the Champions League. Salaries are not fixed and vary depending on the club’s performance in the competition.

This is a significant change from the approach taken by former Chelsea Chairman, Roman Abramovich. The Russian billionaire implemented bonus clauses for winning titles and did not have a penalty mechanism in place if the team performed poorly.

According to the Daily Mail’s research, all players who signed contracts under Todd Boehly will have their salaries reduced by at least 30%. Additionally, if the salaries that could have increased if the club participated in the Champions League are taken into account, these players will lose up to 50% of their income. Meanwhile, players who signed under Roman Abramovich’s tenure will still receive their full salaries.

Nineteen Chelsea players will have their salaries reduced next season, including 12 new signings, such as Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Raheem Sterling, Carney Chukwuemeka, Enzo Fernandez, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, David Datro Fofana, and Malo Gusto. Additionally, seven players who have extended their contracts will also have their salaries reduced, including Thiago Silva, Reece James, Cesar Azpilicueta, Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja, and Marcus Betinelli.

In addition to their salary reductions, Chelsea players are reportedly becoming increasingly frustrated as owner Todd Boehly continuously berates them in the dressing room. The team’s summer exodus of many players has also left many feeling uneasy and unable to fully dedicate themselves to the club.
