On February 1st, expert Fabrizio Romano announced that Chelsea and Benfica have completed the transfer of Enzo Fernandez. The 22-year-old midfielder has passed his medical and the contract is until 2031. The fee is 121 million euros, a new record in the English Premier League.
Chelsea will pay in 6 installments but must pay an advance of 40 million euros. Romano said that the two club owners made a frantic effort to complete the deal. This is Chelsea’s eighth deal of the winter season. Before Fernandez, Chelsea brought in 7 new recruits with a transfer amount of nearly 250 million euros in January 2023. No team in Europe shopped as much as “The Blues” at the 2022/23 mid-season market. Chelsea alone spends more than all four top European leagues combined, the Bundesliga (49.4 million euros), La Liga (24.1), Ligue 1 (19.3), and Serie A (9).
At the 2022 World Cup, 21-year-old midfielder Enzo Fernandez made a significant contribution to Argentina’s championship campaign and was named the tournament’s best young player. His impressive performance increased his market value. Prior to this, Benfica had only paid 18 million euros to acquire 75% of its value from River Plate.
This transfer will benefit River Plate as they are expected to receive up to 41 million euros from the transfer fee of Fernandez joining Chelsea. This is a new record for them as the highest amount they have received from selling a player was 35 million euros for Javier Saviola’s transfer to Barcelona. Chelsea, in just one month, has taken the transfer market by storm, becoming the most active buying team in Europe with 8 new players and a total transfer spend of close to 350 million euros.
