Thiago Silva’s career at Chelsea has ended

Thiago Silva’s career at Chelsea may be coming to an end soon. The 39-year-old defender has been a key player for the Blues since arriving in 2020, but his time at Stamford Bridge looks to be numbered.

During Chelsea’s recent match against Manchester City, Thiago Silva was absent due to injury. His young understudies Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill filled in admirably. The Blues’ defense was under tremendous pressure from Man City’s attack, but they only conceded 1 goal at the Etihad. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for Chelsea before Rodri equalized for Man City. Unlucky for Chelsea, Rodri’s kick hit an away team player and changed direction, leaving goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic unable to block it. Their impressive performances have led some to question whether Silva will be able to regain his starting spot when he returns from injury.

As Jamie Carragher noted, Disasi deserved high praise for his efforts against City. The former Liverpool defender believes that even when Silva is fit again, he will face stiff competition from Chelsea’s talented young center-backs. With Silva nearing the end of his career at age 39, Carragher speculated that his days as a Chelsea player are likely numbered.

Carragher stated, “I think it’s very difficult for Thiago Silva to return to the starting lineup between now and the end of the season unless someone gets injured.” He believes the development of Disasi and Colwill makes it hard to justify Silva continuing to start regularly. After years of excellent service, Silva may have reached the final days of his Chelsea career.

At 39 years old, Silva cannot be expected to keep performing at the highest level much longer. Though no official decision has been made yet regarding Thiago Silva’s future, it appears his storied career at Chelsea is likely winding down. The emergence of Chelsea’s young talent in central defense while Silva was injured could mark the beginning of the end of the veteran Brazilian’s tenure with the Blues.
