Who’s Won The Most FA Cups Of All Time

Man City just took down their rivals Man United to win the 2023 FA Cup final. What a match! But with over 140 years of history behind it, which clubs have lifted the FA Cup trophy the most times ever?

City’s hunt to win the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup treble is looking good. They just need to get past Inter Milan in the Champions League to make history.

The two Manchester powerhouses are definitely among the 44 total clubs to have won the oldest competition in football. But Who’s Won The Most FA Cups Of All Time?

Arsenal: 14 Wins

Well, it’s no surprise that Arsenal have won the FA Cup more than any other club – a whopping 14 times!

The Gunners got their first taste of FA Cup glory back in 1930, beating Huddersfield Town 2-0 under manager Herbert Chapman. That kicked off a really successful period for Arsenal in the 1930s where they scooped up 5 league titles too. They won another FA Cup in 1936 – their dominance was clear.

But Arsenal’s best FA Cup years have definitely come more recently. Between 1998 and 2020, they won the famous competition a crazy 8 times! Seven of those trophies came under manager Arsene Wenger – what a boss! He’s the most decorated manager ever in the FA Cup, the only Arsenal manager to win it multiple times.

Wenger’s first FA Cup win was in 1998 against Newcastle. Arsenal made it to the final again in 2001 but lost to Liverpool. From then on though, it was trophy after trophy – the Gunners won 7 FA Cup finals in a row, going undefeated. That equaled Tottenham’s streak of 7 straight unbeaten finals from 1901 to 1987 – very impressive company!

Most recently in 2020, Arsenal won their 14th FA Cup under manager Mikel Arteta, beating Chelsea 2-1 behind closed doors at Wembley. Arteta had won the Cup twice as a player, so this was his first trophy leading Arsenal.

With a history like that, no wonder Arsenal are the kings of the FA Cup! It’s been an amazing era of success.

Manchester United: 12 wins

Manchester United are right behind Arsenal with 12 FA Cup wins over the years. And after making the 2023 final, they’ve now tied Arsenal’s record for most FA Cup final appearances ever – 21!

But it hasn’t always been celebrations for United in cup finals. Out of those 21 times playing in the final, they’ve actually lost 9 – more than any other club. Ouch!

Still, 12 wins is pretty amazing! 5 of those came under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. And their last FA Cup trophy was in 2016, when Louis Van Gaal’s squad beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in extra time. That was Van Gaal’s final match in charge.

Since then though, United have had a bit of final frustration. Other than that 2016 win, they’ve been runners-up 4 out of the last 5 times they’ve made the FA Cup final.

Making it to the final is an accomplishment in itself. But no doubt United are hungry to get their hands on that trophy again soon and add to their impressive history in the famous competition. With a record-tying 21 final appearances, this club knows how to go the distance!

Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur: 8 wins

Right behind United and Arsenal are three more English giants – Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham. Each of those clubs has won the FA Cup 8 times over the years.

Chelsea in particular has been a fixture in FA Cup finals recently. Before 2022-23, they had reached 5 of the previous 6 finals! But actually winning those finals has been tough for the Blues lately.

Here’s a rough stat – Chelsea holds the unwanted record for most FA Cup finals lost in a row, with 3 straight from 2020 to 2022. Ouch!

Their first FA Cup win came way back in 1970, beating Leeds United 2-1 at Old Trafford. After a long dry spell, they finally got another in 1997 under manager Ruud Gullit, taking down Middlesborough.

Since then, 6 more FA Cups have rolled in for Chelsea, 4 of them between 2007 and 2012. Defender Ashley Cole was on the Chelsea squad for each of those 4 wins. Combined with the 3 FA Cups he won earlier at Arsenal under Wenger, Cole has an incredible 7 FA Cup winner’s medals – more than any other player ever!

Despite some recent final frustrations, Chelsea has still enjoyed plenty of FA Cup success over the years. 8 wins cements them as one of the legendary clubs in this historic competition.

Liverpool are the current FA Cup holders after beating Chelsea on penalties last year – their 8th FA Cup title ever. Before that, their last win came back in 2006 against West Ham in the famous “Gerrard Final”. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard scored twice, including a clutch 91st minute equalizer to save the Reds. He also nailed his penalty in the shootout – what a match!

Speaking of FA Cup final goals, former Liverpool striker Ian Rush holds the record with 5 total. He bagged 2 against Everton in 1986, another brace versus the Toffees in 1989, and 1 against Sunderland in 1992. Simply the king of FA Cup final day!

Meanwhile, Tottenham haven’t made the final since way back in 1991 against Nottingham Forest. But when Spurs do reach the final, they almost never lose – they’ve won 8 of the 9 finals they’ve appeared in. That’s a wild 89% win rate! Only a 1987 loss to Coventry City mars their FA Cup final record.

Tottenham’s best Cup years came in the early 1980s when they won back-to-back finals against Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers. What a dominant run that must have been for Spurs fans.

While it’s been over 30 years since their last triumph, Tottenham have certainly made their mark as one of the FA Cup’s most successful clubs. 8 wins in 9 finals is the stuff of legends!

Aston Villa, Manchester City: 7 Wins

Given how Manchester City have dominated English football under manager Pep Guardiola, you might be surprised to know he’s only won the FA Cup twice so far. His first came in 2019 when City crushed Watford 6-0 in the final – tying the record for biggest FA Cup final win ever set by Bury in 1903. That FA Cup completed a domestic treble for City that year along with the Premier League and League Cup.

In 2023, Pep claimed his second FA Cup as City beat rivals Man United 2-1. That marks 6 domestic trophies out of 6 finals for him at City – not bad!

Though City probably should have another FA Cup from 2013. That year they shockingly lost 1-0 to Wigan Athletic in one of the biggest Cup final upsets ever.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa might seem oddly high on this list, but football didn’t start in 1992! Villa won 7 FA Cups back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Their last win came in 1957 beating Man United. After that, it took a whopping 43 more years for Villa to make another FA Cup final, where they lost to Chelsea in 2000.

Villa’s most recent final was in 2015 but it was forgettable – Arsenal breezed past them 4-0. Still, those 7 early FA Cup wins cement Villa’s place as one of the historic giants of the famous competition.

Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers: 6 Wins

Blackburn Rovers had an amazing run of FA Cup success from 1884 to 1928 – all 6 of their wins came in that stretch! In fact, between 1884 and 1891 they dominated by winning 5 of the 8 finals, including a three-peat from 1884 to 1886. Three FA Cups in a row is tied for the most ever, alongside Wanderers in the late 1800s.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United had to wait until their 4th try to finally lift the Cup in 1910, after losing finals in 1905, 1906 and 1908. But wins #2 and #3 followed for Newcastle in 1924 and 1932. Then in the early 1950s, they really got rolling again – back-to-back FA Cup trophies in 1951 and 1952 under manager Stan Seymour. Their 6th and most recent Cup came in 1955, as they beat Man City 3-1.

Newcastle also has the unique experience of being on the wrong end of one of the biggest FA Cup upsets ever. In the 3rd round in 1972, they lost to non-league Hereford United. Hereford were down 1-0 in the closing minutes before Ronnie Radford scored a famous equalizer. Then Hereford’s Ricky George won it for the massive underdogs in extra time! One for the history books.

Multiple Times FA Cup Winners:

Everton, West Bromwich Albion, Wanderers: 5 wins each

Everton, West Bromwich Albion, and Wanderers have each lifted the famous FA Cup trophy on 5 occasions. Everton’s wins came between 1906 and 1995, with multiple eras of success. Their first triumph was a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in 1906. Further wins followed in 1933, 1966, 1984, and most recently in 1995 against Manchester United.

For West Brom, their 5 FA Cups were won between 1888 and 1968. They had an early successful period in the late 19th century, winning the cup in 1888 and 1892. Their next triumph didn’t come until 1931, but further wins followed in 1954 and 1968. West Brom’s 1968 extra-time victory over Everton was their last FA Cup final appearance to date.

As for Wanderers, their 5 FA Cup wins remarkably came consecutively between 1877 and 1882, making them the first dominant force in the history of the competition. Playing at Kennington Oval in London, Wanderers defeated Oxford University in the first ever FA Cup final in 1872. Their run of successive wins in the late 1870s cemented their status as one of the era’s strongest clubs.

Wolves, Bolton Wanderers, Sheffield United: 4 wins each

Wolves, Bolton Wanderers, and Sheffield United have each lifted the prestigious FA Cup 4 times over the history of the competition.

For Wolves, their wins came in 1893, 1908, 1949 and 1960. Their first triumph was a 1-0 win over Everton in 1893, which started a successful early period for the club. Their 1949 and 1960 victories bookended another successful era in the 1950s under Stan Cullis.

Bolton Wanderers’ 4 FA Cups were won between 1923 and 1958. The Trotters defeated West Ham United 2-0 in the first ever Wembley final in 1923 to claim their first trophy. Further wins followed in 1926, 1929 and 1958. Their last victory came against Manchester United as Nat Lofthouse scored twice in a comeback win.

Sheffield United’s cup wins arrived between 1899 and 1925. After losing the 1901 final, they finally got their hands on the trophy in 1899 by defeating Derby County. Further wins came in 1902, 1915 and 1925 to make it 4 victories for the Blades. Their 1925 triumph over Cardiff City was their last FA Cup final appearance so far.

Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham United: 3 wins each

For Sheffield Wednesday, their wins arrived in 1896, 1907 and 1935. After losing their first final in 1893, they finally got their hands on the trophy by defeating Wolves 2-1 in 1896. Further wins followed against Everton in 1907 and West Brom in 1935, which marked their last FA Cup triumph so far.

West Ham United’s cup wins came in 1964, 1975, and 1980. After losing finals in 1923 and 2006, they finally tasted success by beating Preston North End 3-2 in 1964. Their wins in 1975 and 1980 came under the management of John Lyall, cementing their status as one of England’s top clubs in the 1970s and 80s. A Trevor Brooking header saw them defeat Arsenal 1-0 in the 1980 final.

Though they have lifted the trophy just 3 times each, Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham have produced some classic FA Cup moments over the years. Their wins have thrilled fans and helped establish their proud histories in English football.

Preston North End, Old Etonians, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Bury: 2 wins each

Preston North End, Old Etonians, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Bury have each won the historic FA Cup twice over the years.

Preston were dominant in the early years, winning the first ever FA Cup in 1888 before claiming it again in 1889. The Old Etonians triumphed in 1879 and 1882. Portsmouth won back-to-back FA Cups in 1939 and 1949. Sunderland lifted the trophy in 1937 and 1973. Nottingham Forest were successful in 1898 and 1959. Finally, Bury won the Cup in 1900 and 1903 to earn their two victories.

Though they haven’t collected as many trophies as some clubs, each of these teams has left their mark on FA Cup history. Their victories were sources of great pride and cemented their reputations as capable of competing with the top sides of their eras. Winning the FA Cup even just twice is an impressive achievement, and an enduring part of these clubs’ storied histories.
